Mark Siddall, RIBA
Hi, I'm Mark Siddall.
I'm passionate about enabling people to lead happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives and I enjoy working with people to help create happier, healthier, more comfortable lifestyles in a beautiful, quality assured, ultra low energy homes, workplaces and communities.
As an architect I specialise in helping my clients create characterful modern homes, workplaces and communities that have a real sense of place.
I created LEAP, the architectural practice, to design homes and workplaces where people can thrive. Developing the practice was also my chance to throw down the gauntlet and challenge to poor quality design and construction.
Many of the projects that I work upon satisfy the internationally renowned Passivhaus Standard though, with the qualifying clients, I do work on other projects.
Not just an architect
In addition to being an RIBA Chartered Architect, and having trained to become an architectural technologist, I am provide technical advice for the Passivhaus Trust. To date I have contributed to two papers (one setting out how Passivhaus relates to UK law, and another about quality assurance).
I am also a Trustee of the Association for Environment Conscious Building, one of the UK's oldest and most long standing sustainable construction membership organisations.
For the last ten years I have tutored at Newcastle University. At first it was for the final year of the Bachelors in Architecture, and now I tutor on the Masters in Urban Design. For three years I was a Senior Lecturer in Construction at Northumbria University.
Finally, when time permits, I train architects, engineers, building contractors and trades in how to design and construct better quality buildings. Back in 2010 myself and an number of other UK experts co-authored what has become the AECB Certified Passivhaus Designer Training Course. In 2013, on behalf of the Royal Institute of British Architects, I delivered CPD training about Passivhaus to architects throughout the north of England.
We were very fortunate that Mark accepted our invitation and came to New Zealand. His presence and support at the inaugural South Pacific Passive House Conference was very much appreciated. As was his enthusiasm for improving the quality of design and construction. ...We hope that, at some point in the future, Mark will return once again.
Dr Kara Rosemeier, board member, Passive House Institute New Zealand (2015)
“Mark …is one of the pioneers to introduce Passivhaus to the UK. His experience and ongoing research into building performance makes him one of the UK’s most skilled and knowledgeable Passivhaus Architects. ….I have no doubt that Mark Siddall’s buildings also offer an economical attractive solution to the investors.”
- Dr Wolfgang Feist, Passivhaus Institute (creator of the Passivhaus Standard)
“It was clear when I met Mark for the first time that he has a true passion for his work. He has a wealth of knowledge on a wide range of construction and energy related issues and is committed to designing and constructing buildings that attempt to perform ‘as designed’.
...It has been a joy to work with someone so committed and knowledgeable.”
- Dr David Johnston, Leeds Beckett University
"Mark was a pivotal part of this team and his role as Passivhaus consultant enabled us to pull the whole thing together. ...Without Mark's input we would not have been as successful in delivery and consider that we would have suffered unnecessary cost, delays and frustrations."
- Anthony Kavanagh, Keepmoat
The drawings “….covered every foreseen detail and problem which could occur in the building process.
“…The exceptional standard of construction documents definitely saved the client money.
“….We could not have built the project with a standard batch of architects drawings and a specification.”
- Joe Dixon, Director of J.D. Joinery and Building
